How the translator works
- Machine translation. Your text is sent to MyMemory, a free translation service run by Translated, which combines a large translation memory with machine translation. This site does not store what you type.
- Up to 5,000 characters. The service accepts about 500 characters per request, so longer text is split at sentence boundaries and translated piece by piece; the parts appear as they arrive.
- Daily limit. Free anonymous use of MyMemory is limited to about 5,000 characters per day. If you reach it, the translator tells you; try again the next day.
- Listen. The speaker buttons read the text aloud with your device's built-in voices (availability depends on your browser and system).
Getting a better Portuguese to English translation
- Keep sentences complete. Full sentences with punctuation translate better than fragments or long run-on paragraphs.
- Check the variant. Some words change meaning between Brazil and Portugal — propina is a tuition fee in Portugal but a bribe in Brazil. See Brazilian vs European Portuguese.
- Watch for false friends. Pretender means “to intend”, atualmente means “currently”. See the false friends list.
- Idioms come out literally. “Pagar o pato” is not about ducks. See Portuguese sayings and idioms.
- Review before you rely on it. For contracts, medical information or official documents, use a qualified human translator. Our guide to what machine translation gets wrong has a checklist.

About the Portuguese language
Portuguese is a Romance language that developed in the west of the Iberian Peninsula. It is an official language of nine countries — Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Equatorial Guinea — and of Macau, with well over 250 million speakers. Brazil accounts for the large majority of them, which is why most online Portuguese, and most machine-translation training data, is Brazilian.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Portuguese to English translator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up or payment. Translations come from the free MyMemory service, which limits anonymous use to about 5,000 characters per day per user; if you reach the limit, try again the next day.
How accurate is the translation?
It is machine translation: usually good for understanding everyday text and drafting messages, weaker on idioms, slang, ambiguous words and specialist terminology. Have a qualified human translator check anything legal, medical or official.
Can I translate English to Portuguese?
Yes. Click the swap button between the language names to translate from English into Portuguese, and choose Brazil or Portugal to get the matching variant.
Does it support Brazilian and European Portuguese?
Yes. Choose Brazil (PT-BR) or Portugal (PT-PT) in the variant menu. The choice mainly matters when translating into Portuguese, where vocabulary differs, for example ônibus vs autocarro for bus.
How much text can I translate at once?
Up to 5,000 characters. The translation service accepts about 500 characters per request, so longer text is split at sentence boundaries and translated piece by piece.
Is my text stored?
This site does not store your text. To translate it, the text is sent to the MyMemory API (Translated srl), whose own privacy terms apply, so do not paste passwords, personal data or confidential documents.
